Writing For Research - retreats and courses for academic writers

Creative Writing For Publication

Places: 13-20

Date: 20-23 May 2024

Do you need time to write a journal article, book chapter, doctoral thesis or suchlike? Would you like to work in a characterful place with a small group of like-minded people and all meals provided? Do you like the sound of daily taught sessions, writing support on tap, and plenty of time to write? Then this residential retreat may be just what you need.

The Venue

The venue is Northern College near Barnsley in Yorkshire. The college is housed at Wentworth Castle, a grade-1 listed country house dating from 1670. The castle has links to slavery and exploitation from the centuries of empire. More recently it has supported the suffragette and trade union movements, as well as residential adult education. People attending courses at the College have free access to the extensive castle gardens, and tours of the castle are also available.

The People

This retreat is run by independent researcher and scholar Dr Helen Kara who has been teaching creative writing to academics and other professionals around the world since 2015.

Accessibility

The venue is accessible for wheelchair users and others. We will do our best to meet any access needs that you may have, though we do not claim full accessibility because people’s access needs may conflict. Should this occur we will communicate with both parties and aim to find an optimal resolution.

Transport

Northern College is close to the M1 and offers free parking to people attending courses. By public transport, take a train or bus to Barnsley Interchange and then catch the number 34 from stand A14 to Northern College for a discounted price of £1.

The Timetable

The retreat starts on Monday afternoon with introductions and warm-up writing sessions. You will have the opportunity for a one-to-one meeting with Helen Kara during the retreat if you would like to discuss your writing, research methods, ethics, and/or the doctoral process. The evenings are restful times with space for reading or chats - or, if you like, more writing! The retreat finishes after lunch on Thursday.

Booking & Prices

The cost will be £549 per person including accommodation and catering. For more details and to book, please email enquiries@creativeresearchmethods.com

We have to confirm our booking of this venue by 18 April 2024. If we do not have enough bookings by then, the retreat will not go ahead. So if you are thinking of attending, please book your place ASAP.
